First Lady of Malawi, Her Excellency Professor Gertrude
Mutharika, has officially launched the National "My Clean School, My
Pride" campaign at Holy Family Primary School Ground, in Phalombe district, aiming to combat
preventable diseases through improved institutional hygiene.
Speaking during the launch, Prof. Mutharika shared her
vision of fostering clean schools, homes, and hospitals across Malawi to create
a healthier environment. She noted that it remains a tragedy for the nation to
lose citizens to preventable illnesses like cholera.
The initiative, which spans both public and private
institutions, will see primary and secondary schools compete for sanitation
awards at the district and national levels. The competition is designed to
incentivize schools to maintain high environmental and hygiene standards.
Dingiswayo Jere, the Chairperson for the Beautify Malawi
(BEAM) Trust, expressed confidence that the campaign will successfully instill
a lasting culture of sanitation and positive behavioral change among students
nationwide.
Concurring with these remarks member of Parliament for Phalombe West, Tiaone Hendry, hailed
the initiative as a historic milestone that will foster a healthier and more
productive populace.
