Her Excellency Prof. Gertrude Mutharika, First Lady of the Republic of Malawi, has commended the People’s Republic of China for the enduring and cordial diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace during the handover of a K40 million donation to the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, the First Lady expressed deep appreciation for a partnership she described as being rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for national progress.

Accepting the donation, Her Excellency noted that she "deeply treasures" the collaboration, emphasizing its importance in achieving long-term developmental goals.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Lu Xu, reaffirmed China’s commitment to the warm relationship, stating that Malawi remains a priority partner. She noted that the financial contribution is specifically earmarked to support BEAM’s ongoing sanitation and waste management initiatives.

In a significant boost to the education sector, Ambassador Lu Xu further announced that the Chinese government will award scholarships for studies in China to top-performing schools in sanitation and hygiene.

The support extends beyond financial aid; China will continue to provide short-term capacity-building courses to the BEAM Trust. This partnership aligns with BEAM’s expanded 2026–2030 strategic plan, which focuses on elevating national standards in health, sanitation, and environmental hygiene.
